Favorite Places: St. John USVI
From time to time, I plan to spotlight some of our favorite places that we’ve travelled to over the years…and the first place I’d like to start with is St. John in the US Virgin Islands.
We first visited St. John in January 2011 to celebrate our anniversary. The actual travel (flight + taxi + ferry) was a bit long, but thankfully it was just the 2 of us, which made the long travel day much easier. After about 14 hours of travel, we spent the final 15 minutes sitting on the top deck of the ferry boat stargazing and getting our first glimpse of Cruz Bay. We arrived weary and tired, but truly excited to explore a new place. We grabbed our rental car, drove across the island , and finally arrived at our Villa (which was awesome btw) on the Coral Bay side and more or less collapsed. I remember thinking to myself that night, I sure hope this place is cool because that was a helluva long trip to get here.
The next morning, we awoke early to see the most spectacular views overlooking Coral Bay. I was instantly re-charged, and ready to go see more of the island. As I soon found out, the travel day was 100% worth it….and I very quickly realized that we had arrived in paradise.
We spent the next week trying out a new beach every day. People recognize St. John from the iconic Trunk Bay overlook photo, but the reality is there are at least 20 other beaches that are equally as spectacular. A few of our favorites were: Maho Bay, Salomon Beach, and Caneel Bay. The beaches are honestly the best I’ve ever been to….super warm and calm water, beautiful shades of blue/green, fine white sand, and very clean. I honestly didn’t realize that a place like this existed in the good ol’ USofA!!!
In addition to all of the pristine beaches, there are fantastic hiking opportunities throughout the National Park (which covers ~60% of the island), and also 2 fun towns (Cruz Bay and Coral Bay) that offer lots of great restaurants and charm. St. John even has a floating beach bar called Angels Rest that typically hangs out in Hansen’s Bay on the East End of the island. Hard to beat that combo: Cool/Funky towns, amazing beaches, national park, and floating beach bars!!! And I forgot one very important thing….if you ever get bored of all that St. John has to offer, the BVI’s are just a short boat trip away….and talk about good fun and jaw-dropping beauty! The BVI’s are sure to get some writing/blog time in a future post, so stay tuned.
If you get the chance to visit St. John, please do. You will not be disappointed.
